The Return Of The Seventy: Joy And Authority

The seventy messengers have returned with reports of extraordinary success. They are marveled that even the demons are subject to them in Jesus’ name. The Master shared their joy but refocused their perspective: "Do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven."

In this hour, Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, praising the Father for His sovereign choice to reveal the mysteries of the Kingdom to "infants" rather than the worldly-wise. The authority of the disciples is confirmed, but their identity in the Father’s book remains their greatest treasure.

"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven."
— Luke 10:20

Elijah Confronts The Prophets Of Baal On Carmel

In a dramatic showdown of spiritual power, the prophet Elijah has challenged the 450 prophets of Baal to a contest of fire. After the pagan priests failed to rouse their god, Elijah repaired the altar of Yahweh and prayed. Fire fell from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even the water in the trench.

"Then the fire of Yahweh fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench."
— 1 Kings 18:38

The Fire Of Yahweh At Taberah

Shortly after leaving Sinai, the people began to complain about their hardships. In response to their ingratitude, the fire of Yahweh burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. Moses interceded, and the fire died out, but the place was named Taberah, a sobering reminder of the danger of a murmuring heart.

"And the people were like those who complain of misfortune in the ears of Yahweh... and the fire of Yahweh burned among them."
— Numbers 11:1
Timeline Box: The events at Taberah occurred during the early days of the trek from Sinai.

Editorial: Fire And Joy

Fire can be a judgment, as at Taberah, or a confirmation, as on Carmel. Similarly, power can be a distraction, as for the seventy, or a testimony. The common thread is the presence of God. Today, let us seek the joy of belonging to Him more than the power of doing for Him.
