The Healing At The Pool Of Bethesda

By the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem, Jesus has healed a man who had been infirm for thirty-eight years. With a simple command—"Get up, pick up your mat and walk"—the Master bypassed the superstition of the pool and displayed His direct authority over sickness. Because this act occurred on the Sabbath, it has ignited a fierce controversy with the religious leaders.

Jesus’ defense—"My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working"—only intensified the opposition, as He made Himself equal with God. The miracle of the Sabbath has become the flashpoint for the conflict that will eventually lead to the Cross.

"Jesus said to him, 'Get up, pick up your mat and walk.' Immediately the man became well, and picked up his mat and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on that day."

The Levite’s Concubine And The Outrage At Gibeah

In one of the darkest chapters of Israel’s history, a Levite and his concubine were travelers in the city of Gibeah. The horrific events that transpired there have sent shockwaves through the tribes, leading to a call for total war against the tribe of Benjamin. This tragedy highlights the moral decay of an era where "there was no king in Israel."

"And it happened that everyone who saw it said, 'Nothing like this has ever happened or been seen from the day that the sons of Israel came up from the land of Egypt until this day.'"
— Judges 19:30

The Twelve Spies Depart From Kadesh Barnea

At the edge of the Promised Land, Moses has dispatched twelve spies—one from each tribe—to scout the land of Canaan. Their mission is to assess the fruitfulness of the soil and the strength of the cities. Among them are Joshua and Caleb, whose faith will soon be tested against the giants and high walls of the land.

"So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the command of Yahweh, all of them men who were heads of the sons of Israel."
— Numbers 13:3

Editorial: The Authority To Walk

The man at Bethesda had no hope until he met the Christ; Israel had no hope until they trusted the spies’ good report. Darkness often precedes the dawn, as seen in Gibeah. Today, if you are "paralyzed" by circumstance or fear, hear the Master’s voice: "Pick up your mat and walk." You have the authority of the King behind you.
