Second Temple Era, c. 30 AD

The Light of the World Walks in Solomon’s Colonnade

As the winter chill grips Jerusalem, the Master has been observed walking within the sheltered eastern portico of the Temple. Crowds have gathered during the Feast of Dedication, pressing Him for a plain answer regarding His identity.

In a stunning display of divine authority, the Nazarene declared His absolute unity with the Father, sparking an immediate and violent reaction from the religious establishment. Despite the threat of stones, He remains the central figure of this winter season.

I and the Father are one.
— John 10:22-30
Timeline Box: This reconstruction places the "Feast of Dedication" (Hanukkah) in the winter months of Jesus' final year of ministry. While the Gregorian calendar is in February, the spiritual "winter" of John 10 aligns with the transition between the months of Kislev, Tevet, and Adar.

Temple Completion Nears as Adar Begins

Work on the Second Temple is reaching its fever pitch as the month of Adar commences. Under the leadership of Zerubbabel and the encouragement of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, the structure is nearly ready for dedication. The community is setting aside their mourning for a season of renewed worship and national identity.

And this house was finished on the third day of the month of Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.
— Ezra 6:14-15
Timeline Box: Ezra records that the Temple was finished on the third day of the month of Adar, which corresponds exactly to today’s Hebrew date in 5786.
Exilic Era, 597 BC

Prophet Ezekiel Marks the End of the Siege

Word has reached the exiles in Babylon that the city of Jerusalem has finally fallen. This month marks a somber transition for the displaced people of Judah as they grapple with the reality of the Temple's destruction. Ezekiel’s mouth, once bound in silence regarding the city's fate, has been opened to speak new life into the "dry bones" of the nation.

But the hand of Yahweh had been upon me in the evening, before the one who escaped came to me. And He opened my mouth at the time he came to me in the morning; so my mouth was opened and I was no longer mute.
— Ezekiel 33:21-22
Timeline Box: Ezekiel dates the news of the fall to the "tenth month, on the fifth day," which translates to the winter season (Tevet/Adar) in the Hebrew civil calendar.

EDITORIAL: The Season of Restoration

There is a striking harmony in the biblical calendar for this time of year. While the Old Testament accounts focus on the physical restoration of the Temple in the month of Adar, the New Testament shifts our gaze to the True Temple—Jesus Christ.Just as the exiles find hope in the rebuilding of stone walls, we find our ultimate hope in the One who walked Solomon’s Colonnade, offering a spiritual shelter that no winter storm or earthly army can destroy. This is the season where the physical shadow meets the spiritual substance.
