The Steep Ascent: Jesus Approaches Bethany

Leaving the tropical warmth of Jericho, Jesus and His disciples have begun the grueling fifteen-mile climb through the Judean wilderness toward Jerusalem. The elevation gain of nearly 3,500 feet is a physical metaphor for the spiritual weight the Master carries. The path is narrow and flanked by limestone caves, often used by bandits, yet Jesus walks with a determined pace that leaves His followers breathless.

They are heading toward Bethany, the home of Mary, Martha, and the recently resurrected Lazarus. It is here that Jesus will seek a brief refuge before His public entry into the lion's den of the capital. The air is thinning and cooling as they reach the higher altitudes, a sign that the "High Sabbath" of Passover is drawing near.

"And after He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem."
— Luke 19:28 (LSB)

The Winter Houses Of Samaria Are Warned

The prophet Amos has issued a scathing indictment against the wealthy elite of Samaria who lounge in their "winter houses" while the poor suffer. As the month of Adar brings the final chills of the season, the prophet warns that the ivory-adorned palaces will not protect them from the coming judgment of Yahweh. True security is found in righteousness, not in luxury.

"I will also strike the winter house together with the summer house; the houses of ivory will also perish and the great houses will come to an end,' declares Yahweh."
— Amos 3:15 (LSB)

Moses Recites The Song Of The Rock

The voice of the prophet filled the air as Moses recited the Song of Yahweh. He described God as "The Rock," whose work is perfect and whose ways are just. He recounted the history of Israel's rebellion and God's enduring mercy. The song serves as both a condemnation and a hope, pointing toward a day when God would provide atonement for His land and His people.

"Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth... The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are justice; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He."
— Deuteronomy 32:1-4 (LSB)
Timeline Box: The Song of Moses was the final public address before he was called to Mount Nebo.

Editorial: Climbing The Mountain Of God

Life is often a steep ascent. Whether it is Jesus climbing to Jerusalem or Moses climbing to see the Promise, the journey requires a firm footing on "The Rock." Amos reminds us that earthly "winter houses" are temporary. As we climb through the final days of this season, may our eyes be fixed on the eternal city and the perfect justice of our God.
