A Quiet Evening In Bethany With Friends

The Master has arrived in Bethany, a small village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives. Away from the prying eyes of the Sanhedrin, Jesus is spending time with those He loves most. Lazarus, the man who was four days dead, now sits at the table as a living witness to the Rabbi's power. The atmosphere is one of intimate fellowship and unspoken grief, as the friends sense that this visit is different from those in the past.

While Martha serves and Mary watches, the weight of the coming week begins to settle upon the group. Bethany, meaning "House of Affliction," serves as the final staging ground for the one who would become the "Man of Sorrows." Here, in the quiet before the storm, the Christ finds a moment of peace among the people who truly believe in His name.

"Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead."
— John 12:1 (LSB)
Timeline Box: John provides a specific countdown to Passover, placing Jesus in Bethany six days prior to the feast.

The People Prepare For The First Passover In The New Temple

With the Temple finally completed and the priests sanctified, the returned exiles are beginning the logistical preparations for the Passover. It has been decades since the feast was celebrated in a proper Sanctuary in Jerusalem. The city is being cleaned, the wood for the altar is being gathered, and the hearts of the people are being stirred with the realization that Yahweh has truly returned to Zion.

"For the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together; all of them were pure. Then they slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the exiles..."
— Ezra 6:20 (LSB)
Timeline Box: Ezra 6 notes the purification occurred between the completion of the Temple (3 Adar) and the Passover (14 Nisan).

Moses Is Commanded To Ascend Mount Nebo

The time has finally come. On this day, Yahweh spoke to Moses, commanding him to go up into the mountains of Abarim, to Mount Nebo, and look out over the land of Canaan. He is to see the land with his eyes, though he cannot set foot within it. The giant of the faith, who stood before Pharaoh and parted the sea, is preparing for his final journey into the presence of God.

"Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo... and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession. Then die on the mountain where you ascend..."
— Deuteronomy 32:49-50 (LSB)
Timeline Box: This command followed immediately after the recitation of the Song of Moses at the end of Adar.

Editorial: The View From The Threshold

There is a profound beauty in the "threshold" moments of life. Moses stands on a mountain looking at a land he cannot enter; the exiles stand in a Temple they never thought they'd see; Jesus stands in Bethany looking at a city that will soon crucify Him. All three involve a deep trust in God's sovereign plan. May we, too, find peace on our thresholds, knowing He holds the future.
