Late Winter, c. 33 AD

The Ambition Of James And John Rebuked

As the Master and His disciples make their steady descent toward the Jordan valley, a startling request has disrupted the solemn journey. The mother of James and John approached Jesus, kneeling and asking that her two sons might sit at His right and left hand in His kingdom. This bold political ambition highlights the ongoing misunderstanding among the disciples regarding the true nature of the Messianic reign.

Jesus gently but firmly corrected their worldly perspective, asking if they were able to drink the cup He was about to drink. When the other ten disciples became indignant, the Rabbi used the moment to redefine greatness entirely. He declared that whoever wishes to be first must become a slave, pointing to Himself as the ultimate example of one who came not to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom.

"Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
— Matthew 20:28 (LSB)

Ahab Warned To Prepare For The Spring Campaign

Following a surprising victory over the Arameans, an unnamed prophet of Yahweh has approached King Ahab of Israel with a dire warning. He instructed the king to strengthen himself and observe his military defenses, because "at the turn of the year" (the spring season of Nisan), the King of Aram will return to make war again. The winter peace is only temporary.

"Then the prophet came near to the king of Israel and said to him, 'Go, strengthen yourself and know and see what you have to do; for at the turn of the year the king of Aram will come up against you.'"
— 1 Kings 20:22 (LSB)

The Assembly Reflects On The Wilderness

In the plains of Moab, the newly designated leader, Joshua, is walking the camp of Israel as the days of mourning for Moses begin to wane. The people are spending these quiet days reflecting on the forty years of wandering they are about to leave behind. The manna continues to fall each morning, but the eyes of the tribes are fixed firmly on the rushing waters of the Jordan River to the west.

"You shall remember all the way which Yahweh your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you..."
— Deuteronomy 8:2 (LSB)
Timeline Box: The final days of Adar were spent reflecting on the wilderness before the Nisan crossing.

Editorial: Preparing For The Conflict

Both Ahab and the disciples received warnings that their current season was about to shift into a season of intense conflict. Ahab was told to strengthen himself for a physical war in the spring; James and John were warned about the spiritual "cup" they would have to drink in Jerusalem.

As we near the end of the ecclesiastical year, we are reminded that times of peace are meant to be used for preparation. True greatness is not found in seeking thrones of comfort, but in fortifying our hearts to serve others when the inevitable battles of life begin.
