A Sabbath Rest Before The Storm

Today is the Sabbath, and a tense quiet has settled over the village of Bethany. Jesus is observing the holy day of rest with His disciples and close friends. It is the final Sabbath of His earthly life. While He rests in obedience to the Law, the city of Jerusalem, just over the Mount of Olives, is buzzing with frenetic energy as Passover pilgrims purchase their sacrifices.

Despite the Sabbath restrictions on travel, a great multitude of the Jews have learned that Jesus is in Bethany. They are gathering at the edges of the village, eager to see both the Rabbi and Lazarus. The Master is spending these quiet hours fortifying His spirit, knowing that tomorrow He will officially present Himself to the nation as their King.

"The large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead."
— John 12:9 (LSB)

Ezekiel Sees The Glory Return

In a magnificent vision, Ezekiel the prophet saw the glory of the God of Israel returning to the Temple from the way of the east—the same path it took when it departed years prior. The vision provides immense hope to the exiles: Yahweh has not abandoned His people permanently. He will return to dwell among them in restored glory.

"And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east. And His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory."
— Ezekiel 43:2 (LSB)

The Outer Temple Courts Are Cleansed

King Hezekiah's massive purification effort has reached its final stages. The priests have finished cleansing the inner sanctuary and the porch, and are now sweeping through the outer courts. It has taken eight days to reach this point. The accumulated filth of idol worship is being carried away to the brook Kidron, preparing the house for true sacrifices.

"...and on the eighth day of the month they entered the porch of Yahweh. Then they consecrated the house of Yahweh in eight days, and finished on the sixteenth day of the first month."
— 2 Chronicles 29:17 (LSB)
Timeline Box: The timeline records the progression of the cleansing, hitting the porch on the eighth day.

Editorial: The Glory Approaches From The East

Ezekiel saw the glory of God returning to Jerusalem from the east. Today, Jesus—the incarnate glory of God—rests on the eastern slopes of the Mount of Olives, preparing to enter the city. The parallels are breathtaking.

Before the glory could fully dwell in Hezekiah's day, the Temple had to be meticulously cleansed of its idols. As we observe this final Sabbath of preparation, we must ask ourselves if our own "temples" are clean. Are we ready to receive the King, or are the outer courts of our hearts still cluttered with the idols of this world? The King is at the gates.
