The Last Supper & The Agony In Gethsemane

In a borrowed Upper Room, Jesus shared His final Passover meal with the Twelve. Here, He washed their feet, instituted the New Covenant in His blood, and gave them the new commandment to love one another. The shadow of betrayal hung heavy, culminating in Judas leaving to finalize his dark transaction.

Following the supper, the Master retreated to the olive press of Gethsemane. The weight of the world’s sin became a physical burden, causing Him to sweat drops of blood. As He submitted entirely to the Father's will, the silence of the garden was shattered by the torches and swords of the temple guard. With a kiss, the betrayal was complete.

"And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.'"
— Matthew 26:39 (LSB)

The Manna Ceases In The Promised Land

A monumental shift has occurred in the dietary life of Israel. For forty years, the manna fell from heaven. But today, the day after they ate the produce of the land of Canaan during the Passover, the manna has completely ceased. The transitional phase of wilderness wandering is officially closed.

"And the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten some of the produce of the land, so that the sons of Israel no longer had manna..."
— Joshua 5:12 (LSB)
Timeline Box: The cessation of the manna occurred during the Passover week at Gilgal.

The Exodus Begins: Israel Marches Out Of Egypt

With the cry of Egypt ringing in their ears, the children of Israel have marched out of bondage. Carrying the dough before it was leavened, and laden with the plundered wealth of the Egyptians, the massive assembly is moving eastward. The era of slavery is dead; the journey of freedom has begun.

"Now the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, aside from children."
— Exodus 12:37 (LSB)
Timeline Box: The departure from Egypt began immediately following the Passover night.

Editorial: The Cup Of Submission

Jesus had to submit His human will to the Divine in Gethsemane. When we stop asking God to be on "our side" and start asking to be on "His side," we find ourselves on holy ground. The submission of Christ in the garden is the ultimate model of obedience.

Just as Israel had to leave Egypt and learn to live without the manna, Jesus asks us to leave our old comforts and drink the cup of the New Covenant. It requires total submission and a willingness to walk into the darkness, trusting that the Father's will, though painful, is the only path to true resurrection life.
