HE IS RISEN: The Empty Tomb Shakes The World

Before the sun could break over the Mount of Olives, the earth shook with a violent tremor. An angel of the Lord descended, rolled away the massive stone from the tomb, and sat upon it. The Roman guards, paralyzed with fear, became like dead men. When Mary Magdalene and the other women arrived bearing spices, they found the tomb empty and received the greatest message in history: "He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said."

The grave clothes lie neatly folded inside, but the body of Jesus of Nazareth is gone. Throughout the day, reports of His appearances are spreading—first to Mary in the garden, then to Peter, and to two disciples walking on the road to Emmaus. The despair of Friday has been entirely swallowed up by the impossible, glorious victory of Sunday. Death has been defeated!

"And the angel answered and said to the women, 'Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.'"
— Matthew 28:5-6 (LSB)

David Spares Saul In The Cave

In the wilderness of Engedi, David had the perfect opportunity to kill King Saul, who was hunting him. Instead, he secretly cut off the edge of Saul's robe. By refusing to stretch out his hand against the Lord's anointed, David demonstrated a radical trust in God's justice rather than taking vengeance into his own hands.

"And he said to his men, 'Far be it from me because of Yahweh that I should do this thing to my lord, the anointed of Yahweh, to stretch out my hand against him...'"
— 1 Samuel 24:6 (LSB)

The Crossing Of The Red Sea

With the armies of Pharaoh pressing in behind them and the impassable waters before them, Moses stretched out his staff. Throughout the night, a strong east wind divided the sea, allowing the children of Israel to cross on dry ground. As the morning dawned, the waters returned, completely destroying the Egyptian pursuit. The ultimate physical salvation of the nation is complete.

"Thus Yahweh saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore."
— Exodus 14:30 (LSB)
Timeline Box: The Red Sea crossing is the great Old Testament foreshadowing of passing from death to life.

Editorial: The Ultimate Reversal

Everything changes today. The Red Sea parts, the waters of death are conquered, and the heavy stone is rolled away. Easter Sunday is the ultimate declaration that God always gets the last word.

Death, the final and greatest enemy of humanity, has been conquered by the Firstborn from the dead. The daily news of the world, with all its tragedy and politics, will forever be overshadowed by the eternal news of the empty tomb. The cross was not a tragedy; it was a triumph. He is risen indeed!
