Teaching Concerning The Kingdom Of God

As the month of Iyyar (also known as Ziv) begins, the forty-day period of Jesus' post-resurrection appearances is advancing. During these days, He is frequently appearing to the apostles He had chosen, giving them many convincing proofs that He is alive. His teachings are highly focused, centering entirely on the "things concerning the kingdom of God."

He is preparing them for a transition. They must learn to function not with His physical presence walking beside them, but with His spiritual authority living within them. The Kingdom of God is no longer a future hope tied to a political throne in Jerusalem; it is a present reality that they are about to unleash upon the nations through the power of the Holy Spirit.

"To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God."
— Acts 1:3
Timeline Box: The book of Acts summarizes the interim period before the Ascension as a time of focused Kingdom teaching.

Zerubbabel Appoints Levites For The Temple Work

In the second year of their return to Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel and Jeshua have officially begun the work of rebuilding the house of God. They have appointed the Levites from twenty years old and upward to oversee the work. A sense of immense purpose is filling the returned exiles as the foundation work commences.

"Now in the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem in the second month, Zerubbabel... began the work and appointed the Levites from twenty years old and upward to oversee the work..."
— Ezra 3:8
Timeline Box: Ezra 3:8 explicitly dates the appointment of the temple workers to the second month.

Moses Takes A Census In Sinai

Exactly one month after the Tabernacle was erected, Yahweh has commanded Moses to take a full census of the congregation of the sons of Israel. Every male, twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war, is being registered by their tribes. The chaotic mob of refugees is being organized into a structured, holy army.

"Then Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai... on the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 'Take a census of all the congregation...'"
— Numbers 1:1-2
Timeline Box: Numbers 1:1 explicitly dates the beginning of this military census to the 1st day of the 2nd month (Iyyar/Ziv).

Editorial: Organizing For The Kingdom

The first day of the second month is historically a day of organization. Moses counted the Israelites to form an army; Zerubbabel appointed the Levites to build a temple. In both cases, God was transforming a disorganized group of people into a structured force for His purposes.

During these forty days, Jesus is doing the exact same thing with His disciples. He is organizing their theology and preparing them to build the Church. Passion and zeal are necessary, but they must be paired with divine order. The Kingdom of God requires us to know our roles, stand in our ranks, and prepare for the spiritual work ahead.
