The Ascension Of The Son

On the Mount of Olives, near Bethany, the forty days of post-resurrection ministry have reached their magnificent climax. After blessing His disciples, Jesus began to be lifted up while they were looking on. A cloud received Him out of their sight, physically removing Him from the earthly realm and returning Him to the right hand of the Father.

As the disciples stood gazing intently into the sky, two men in white clothing appeared beside them. They issued a gentle rebuke and a massive promise: "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven." The era of the Church has begun.

"And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight."
— Acts 1:9

Elijah Taken Up In A Whirlwind

As Elijah and Elisha were walking near the Jordan River, an astonishing event separated them. A chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared out of nowhere. In a terrifying display of divine power, the great prophet Elijah was swept up to heaven in a whirlwind, dropping his mantle for Elisha to inherit.

"Then it happened as they were going along and speaking, that behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven."
— 2 Kings 2:11
Timeline Box: Elijah's translation is the most vivid Old Testament parallel to the Ascension of Christ.

Enoch Walks With God And Is Taken

In the early generations of humanity, before the Great Flood, a man named Enoch stood out for his profound piety. Unlike the rest of his contemporaries whose lives ended in death, Enoch simply bypassed the grave. He walked faithfully with God for three hundred years, and then "he was not, for God took him."

"And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him."
— Genesis 5:24
Timeline Box: Enoch is the first of two Old Testament figures to be taken to heaven without experiencing physical death.

Editorial: Taken Up Into Glory

The Ascension is not an afterthought; it is the coronation of the King. Enoch was taken because he walked closely with God. Elijah was taken in a fiery chariot to conclude his prophetic ministry. But Jesus was lifted up in a cloud because He had completely conquered sin and death, returning to His rightful throne.

When Elijah was taken, he left his mantle for Elisha, empowering him to continue the work. When Jesus ascended, He promised to send His Spirit to empower the Church. We are not called to stand around staring at the sky. We are called to pick up the "mantle" of the Gospel and return to our cities with great joy, preparing for the day He returns.
