The Lot Falls To Matthias

Having put forward two qualified men—Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias—the 120 disciples in the upper room did not rely on a popular vote or political maneuvering. Instead, they turned to prayer, appealing to the Lord who knows the hearts of all men to show them which one He had chosen to take the apostolic ministry.

Following ancient Jewish custom for determining the divine will, they cast lots. The lot fell to Matthias, and he was officially added to the eleven apostles. The foundational leadership of the new Church is now fully restored and legally complete, perfectly poised for the impending outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

"And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles."
— Acts 1:26

The Pur Is Cast By Haman

In the Persian court, the wicked Haman, seeking to destroy the Jews, had lots (called "Pur") cast in his presence to determine the best day to execute his genocide. The lot fell on the twelfth month, the month of Adar. What Haman thought was a lucky throw of the dice was actually God sovereignly granting the Jews nearly a year to prepare their defense.

"In the first month, which is the month Nisan... Pur, that is the lot, was cast before Haman from day to day and from month to month, until the twelfth month..."
— Esther 3:7
Timeline Box: The casting of the Pur gave the holiday of Purim its name.

Achan's Sin Is Exposed By Lot

Following the shocking defeat at Ai, Joshua fell on his face before Yahweh. The Lord revealed that someone had stolen things under the ban from Jericho. To find the culprit, Joshua brought Israel forward by tribes, families, and individuals, likely using the Urim and Thummim. The divine lot ultimately singled out Achan of the tribe of Judah.

"Then he brought his household near man by man; and Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was taken."
— Joshua 7:18
Timeline Box: The use of lots isolated the sin that was preventing Israel from progressing in the conquest.

Editorial: The Sovereignty Over The Dice

Proverbs 16:33 states, "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from Yahweh." We see this vividly in biblical history. God used the lot to expose the hidden sin of Achan, and He sovereignly controlled Haman's pagan dice to delay the destruction of the Jews.

When the disciples cast lots for Matthias, it was not a gamble; it was an act of complete surrender to the sovereignty of Jesus. They had done the logical work of finding qualified men, but they left the final choice to the Lord. As we make decisions in our own lives, we must do the hard work of preparation, but ultimately trust that God controls the outcome.
