A Season Of Unified Expectation

With the apostolic leadership restored to twelve, the atmosphere in the upper room is one of profound, unified expectation. The disciples are not waiting with dread, as they did behind locked doors on Easter weekend. They are waiting with the vibrant, joyful anticipation of men and women who have seen the King conquer death.

Every day that passes brings them closer to the festival of Pentecost. They do not know exactly what the "baptism of the Holy Spirit" will look or sound like, but they are fully surrendered to receiving it. Their unity—"with one mind"—is the crucial prerequisite for the coming rushing mighty wind.

"These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer..."
— Acts 1:14

The Elders Prosper Through Prophecy

During the rebuilding of the Second Temple, the Jews faced intense political opposition that halted the work for years. But the prophets Haggai and Zechariah rose up and prophesied to them in the name of the God of Israel. Encouraged by the word of the Lord, Zerubbabel and Jeshua resumed the work, and the elders prospered in their building.

"And the elders of the Jews were building and prospering through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo."
— Ezra 6:14

The Aramean Army Is Struck With Blindness

When the Aramean army surrounded Dothan to capture Elisha, the prophet simply prayed for God to strike them with blindness. Yahweh answered, blinding the entire army. Elisha then led the helpless soldiers directly into Samaria, the capital of Israel. Instead of killing them, he ordered the King of Israel to feed them a great feast and send them home.

"And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh and said, 'Strike this people with blindness, I pray.' So He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha."
— 2 Kings 6:18
Timeline Box: This miraculous event secured a temporary peace between Israel and Aram through mercy rather than warfare.

Editorial: Building In Unity

It is impossible to build the house of God without unity and the prophetic word. The elders in Ezra's day could not finish the physical Temple until Haggai and Zechariah unified them with a word from the Lord.

The 120 disciples in the upper room are the new "elders" preparing to build the new Temple. They are succeeding because they have laid down their arguments over who is the greatest, choosing instead to be of "one mind" in prayer. When the Church is unified in expectation and devoted to prayer, the power of God is inevitable. Division halts construction; unity invites the Spirit.
