The Holy Spirit Falls On Pentecost

The long-awaited promise of the Father has arrived! While the 120 disciples were gathered together in one place on the morning of Pentecost, a sudden noise like a violent rushing wind filled the entire house. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared and rested upon each one of them. In a spectacular display of divine power, they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.

Instantly, the believers began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. The loud noise drew a massive crowd of the international pilgrims who were residing in Jerusalem. Bewilderment swept through the multitude as each man heard the Galilean disciples declaring the mighty deeds of God in his own native language. The era of the Church has been dramatically birthed in fire and wind.

"And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance."
— Acts 2:4
Timeline Box: Pentecost (Shavuot) occurred 50 days after the Feast of Firstfruits, marking the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Asa Removes Idols From Judah

King Asa has taken bold action to restore true worship in Judah. Encouraged by the prophet Azariah, he has removed the abominable idols from the entire land and restored the altar of Yahweh. He even removed his own grandmother, Maacah, from the position of queen mother because she had made an idol in a wooden image.

"Now when Asa heard these words and the prophecy... he took courage and removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin..."
— 2 Chronicles 15:8
Timeline Box: Asa's reforms culminated in a massive gathering in the third month, with preparations beginning in the second month.

The Second Passover Is Instituted

A provision of deep grace has been established in the wilderness. Men who were unclean due to a dead body during the first Passover approached Moses, grieving that they could not present the offering. Yahweh responded by instituting a "Second Passover" exactly one month later. Anyone unclean or on a distant journey may now observe the feast on the fourteenth day of the second month.

"In the second month on the fourteenth day at twilight, they shall celebrate it; they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs."
— Numbers 9:11
Timeline Box: Numbers 9 explicitly dates the observance of Pesach Sheni (the Second Passover) to the 14th of Iyyar.

Editorial: The God Of Second Chances

The 14th of Iyyar is a monumental day of grace. It is the day God allowed the unclean and the delayed to still partake in the Passover. God does not write us off because of our defilement; He provides a second chance to come to the table.

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost operates on this same grace. The very crowds who weeks ago shouted "Crucify Him!" are now hearing the gospel in their own languages. The Spirit has fallen not to destroy the unclean, but to purify them with holy fire. Whether it is a Second Passover or a New Covenant, our God continually makes a way for the distant to draw near.
