The Fellowship Of The Believers
Following the massive influx of 3,000 new believers, a radical new community has rapidly formed in Jerusalem. These new Christians are not merely meeting for weekly services; they are continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship. They are breaking bread from house to house, sharing their lives with intense, glad sincerity.
The early church is marked by a deep sense of awe. The apostles are performing many wonders and signs, authenticating the message of the resurrected Christ. This infant church is setting the permanent standard for Christian community: a group of people totally devoted to the Word, to one another, and to prayer, living in a daily rhythm of worship.
"And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."
— Acts 2:42
Timeline Box:
The establishment of the daily fellowship occurred in the immediate aftermath of the Pentecost conversions.
Editorial: The Ark Of Community
The 17th of Iyyar stands as a severe marker in biblical history: it is the day the Flood began. God judged a wicked world, but He provided an Ark of safety for those who believed Him.
The early Church functioned as a new spiritual Ark. Surrounded by a corrupt generation, the 3,000 new believers devoted themselves to fellowship, prayer, and teaching. They broke bread together and sealed themselves inside the safety of Christian community. When the "floods" of persecution and cultural decay rise around us, our only safety is found in remaining securely within the "Ark" of Christ's body, entirely devoted to one another.
