Uneducated Men Astound The Council

After spending the night in jail, Peter and John were dragged before the supreme Jewish council, including Annas the high priest and Caiaphas. The elite rulers demanded to know by what power or name they had healed the lame man. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter declared that it was by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—the very stone the builders rejected.

The Sanhedrin was left completely paralyzed. They observed the sheer confidence of Peter and John, and realized they were uneducated and untrained men. Yet, they marveled, recognizing that these fishermen had been with Jesus. Furthermore, with the healed man standing right beside them, the council had absolutely nothing to say in reply.

"Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and comprehended that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were marveling, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus."
— Acts 4:13

Moses Asks Hobab To Guide Them

As the Israelites prepare to march into the unknown desert of Paran, Moses has made a humble request to his brother-in-law, Hobab the Midianite. He asked Hobab to come with them and serve as "eyes" for the camp, since he intimately knows where to camp in the wilderness. Despite the presence of the divine cloud, Moses recognizes the value of human experience.

"Then he said, 'Please do not leave us, inasmuch as you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will be as eyes for us.'"
— Numbers 10:31
Timeline Box: This interaction occurred immediately as the camp began to move from Sinai in late Iyyar.

The Ark Of The Covenant Takes The Lead

As the nation begins its march, the Ark of the Covenant of Yahweh is journeying three days ahead of the main body to seek out a resting place for the millions of Israelites. Moses has instituted a battle cry for the movement: "Rise up, O Yahweh! And let Your enemies be scattered."

"Then it happened when the ark set out that Moses said, 'Rise up, O Yahweh! And let Your enemies be scattered, And let those who hate You flee before You.'"
— Numbers 10:35
Timeline Box: The Ark functioned as the vanguard for the traveling nation.

Editorial: The Evidence Of His Presence

Moses knew that surviving the wilderness required someone who knew the terrain, so he asked Hobab to be their eyes. But the ultimate guide was the Ark of the Presence going before them to scatter their enemies.

The Sanhedrin looked at Peter and John and saw uneducated fishermen. They had no formal theological training to navigate the complex legal arguments of the council. But they had something far superior: they had been with Jesus. The presence of Christ in their lives provided an undeniable boldness that silenced the intellectual elite. The greatest apologetic for the Christian faith is not a polished degree, but a life that has clearly spent time in the presence of the risen Lord.
