Apostles Freed By An Angel

The massive popularity of the apostles has pushed the high priest and the sect of the Sadducees over the edge. Filled with jealousy, they arrested the apostles and threw them into the public jail. However, human locks cannot contain a divine mandate. During the night, an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison and led them out.

The angel gave them a specific, dangerous command: "Go, stand and speak to the people in the temple the whole message of this Life." Obeying without hesitation, the apostles entered the Temple about daybreak and began teaching. Meanwhile, the Sanhedrin convened their trial, only to be utterly baffled when officers found the jail securely locked, the guards standing at the doors, but the cells completely empty.

"But during the night, an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said, 'Go, stand and speak to the people in the temple the whole message of this Life.'"

Moses Cries Out For Miriam

Horrified by his sister's sudden, rotting condition, Aaron confessed his foolish sin to Moses and begged him not to let her remain like a stillborn child. Despite her bitter betrayal, Moses immediately cried out to Yahweh with a short, desperate prayer: "O God, heal her, I pray!" God heard him, but mandated that she bear her shame for seven days.

"And Moses cried out to Yahweh, saying, 'O God, heal her, I pray!'"
— Numbers 12:13

Miriam Is Struck With Leprosy

Yahweh has responded furiously to the rebellion of Miriam and Aaron. Calling the three siblings out to the tent of meeting, the Lord descended in a pillar of cloud. He rebuked Aaron and Miriam, declaring that Moses is entrusted with His entire house and speaks with Him mouth to mouth. When the cloud withdrew, Miriam was suddenly leprous, as white as snow.

"But when the cloud had withdrawn from over the tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. As Aaron turned toward Miriam, behold, she was leprous."
— Numbers 12:10
Timeline Box: The sudden judgment of leprosy reinforced the untouchable nature of God's chosen leader.

Editorial: Unstoppable Messengers

You cannot lock up the message of life, and you cannot undermine the messengers of God. The Sadducees tried to throw the apostles in jail out of jealousy, but an angel unlocked the doors and sent them right back to the Temple. Miriam tried to undermine Moses out of jealousy, but God struck her with leprosy to prove His sovereign choice.

Jealousy is a destructive force that blinds religious people to the movement of the Holy Spirit. But God protects His chosen instruments. When we face opposition from jealous authorities, we must obey the angel's command: keep standing, keep speaking, and trust that the God who opens prison doors will fight our battles for us.
