Philip Called To The Desert Road

In the midst of the massive, joyful revival in Samaria, Philip has received a puzzling command. An angel of the Lord appeared and instructed him to leave the thriving city and travel south to the desolate desert road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza. Without questioning the logic of leaving a successful ministry for a wasteland, Philip arose and went.

On that isolated road, divine providence orchestrated a historic encounter. Philip saw a chariot carrying an Ethiopian eunuch, a high court official who managed the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. The man had traveled thousands of miles to worship in Jerusalem and was currently reading the prophet Isaiah aloud as he traveled back to Africa.

"But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, 'Rise up and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.' (This is a desert road.)"

A Promise Made To The Eunuch

Under the Law of Moses, a eunuch was strictly forbidden from entering the assembly of Yahweh. But the prophet Isaiah delivered a glorious promise for the future: if a eunuch holds fast to the covenant and chooses what pleases the Lord, God will give him a memorial and a name within His house that is better than sons and daughters—an everlasting name.

"For thus says Yahweh, 'To the eunuchs who keep My sabbaths, And choose what pleases Me, And hold fast My covenant, To them I will give in My house and within My walls a memorial... I will give them an everlasting name...'"
— Isaiah 56:4-5

The Queen Of Sheba Seeks Wisdom

Centuries ago, another royal official from the southern reaches of Africa traveled to Jerusalem. The Queen of Sheba, having heard of the fame of Solomon, traveled vast distances across the desert with camels carrying spices and gold. She sought answers to her difficult questions and found the wisdom of God dwelling in the capital of Israel.

"Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon concerning the name of Yahweh, she came to test him with difficult questions."
— 1 Kings 10:1

Editorial: The Obedience Of Inconvenience

God’s strategies rarely match our logic. Philip was in the middle of a massive city-wide revival, yet God called him to a lonely desert road. Philip's unquestioning obedience to this inconvenient detour resulted in the Gospel breaching the continent of Africa.

The Ethiopian eunuch was a man caught in between. He was wealthy enough to own a scroll of Isaiah and devout enough to travel to Jerusalem, but because of his physical condition, the Law forbade him from fully entering the Temple. He was reading the scroll, searching for hope. God pulled Philip out of a revival to make sure that one lonely, excluded man reading in a chariot understood that the door to the Kingdom was finally open.
