Peter Heals Aeneas In Lydda and Raises Tabitha in Joppa

After Saul of Tarsus departed for his hometown, the early church enjoyed a period of relative peace and growth. During this time, the Apostle Peter continued his extensive ministry, traveling throughout various regions to strengthen the believers and preach the Gospel. One significant stop was Lydda, a city in the plain of Sharon, where Peter encountered a man named Aeneas.

Aeneas, who had been paralyzed and confined to his bed for eight years, was miraculously healed by Peter in the name of Jesus Christ. This powerful demonstration of divine healing led to many residents of Lydda and Sharon turning to the Lord. Shortly thereafter, Peter was called to Joppa, where he performed another profound miracle, raising the devout disciple Tabitha (Dorcas) from the dead, further confirming the power of the resurrected Christ and leading to widespread belief in the region.

And it came about that as Peter was traveling through all parts, he came down also to the saints who lived in Lydda. And there he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been confined to bed for eight years, paralyzed. And Peter said to him, ''Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your bed.'' And immediately he got up. And all who lived at Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.

Jews Across the Empire Arm for Self-Defense and Rejoice

The king's new decree, providing explicit permission for the Jewish people to defend themselves against their enemies, has spread like wildfire across the 127 provinces from India to Cush. In every province and city, wherever the command and decree arrived, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. This remarkable reversal of fortune has transformed despair into hope, as communities now rally to prepare for the appointed day when they may stand for their lives against those who sought their destruction.

And in each and every province and in each and every city, wherever the king''s command and his decree arrived, there was gladness and joy for the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many among the peoples of the land became Jews, for the dread of the Jews had fallen on them.

Royal Decree Proclaims Jewish Right to Self-Defense

Following the treacherous plot of Haman and Queen Esther's courageous intervention, a new royal edict has been issued across the vast Persian Empire. Dated the twenty-third day of the third month, Sivan, this decree grants the Jewish people the unprecedented right to assemble, defend themselves, and destroy any who would attack them. The swift couriers, dispatched from Shushan on royal steeds, are now disseminating this vital news to all 127 provinces, bringing hope and a chance for survival to a people once marked for destruction.

And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed it with the king''s signet ring, and sent letters by couriers on horseback, riding on swift steeds that were bred from the royal stud. By these letters the king granted the Jews who were in each and every city the right to assemble and to stand for their lives, to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate every armed force of a people or province that might attack them, children and women included, and to plunder their spoil.

From Deliverance to Divine Display: God's Hand at Work

This Sivan, our chronicles highlight the enduring power of God's intervention, whether for physical protection or spiritual transformation. In the Persian era, the decree on the 23rd of Sivan heralded a season of profound relief and preparation for the Jewish people. What appeared to be an inescapable doom was miraculously overturned by divine providence, demonstrating God's unwavering commitment to His covenant people and His ability to turn tables on their enemies. It was a time when fear gave way to fierce resolve and deep gratitude.

Centuries later, the same divine hand is at work through His apostles. Following Saul's dramatic conversion, Peter's ministry in Lydda and Joppa during this season reveals God's power in a new dimension: bringing healing, restoring life, and drawing many to faith in Christ. Both eras resonate with the theme of God actively manifesting His will in human history, turning moments of despair into triumphs of life, whether physical salvation for a nation or spiritual salvation for individuals, always for His glory.
