Paul’s Accusers Arrive In Caesarea For Hearing Before Felix

Five days after Paul's arrival in Caesarea, Ananias the high priest, some elders, and a lawyer named Tertullus traveled from Jerusalem to present their case against Paul before Governor Felix. This delegation signified the Jewish leaders' determination to prosecute Paul vigorously, bringing formal charges of sedition, profanation of the Temple, and leadership of the Nazarene sect.

Tertullus began by flattering Felix, then launched into a passionate accusation, painting Paul as a pestilential fellow, stirring up riots among the Jews throughout the world, and attempting to desecrate the temple. The Jews present eagerly affirmed these accusations, ready to present their "proof" against the apostle.

After five days Ananias the high priest came down with some elders and a lawyer named Tertullus… they reported to the governor against Paul. And after Paul had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying… 'we have found this man a pestilential fellow and a mover of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes, who also tried to desecrate the temple; and we seized him.'
— Acts 24:1-5

Israel Returns Home Joyful After Temple Dedication

Filled with joy and gladness of heart, they returned to their tents, blessing the king and giving thanks for the immense goodness the LORD had shown to David, Solomon, and all of Israel, marking a spiritual high point for the newly established kingdom.

God Commands Israel To Worship At A Chosen Sanctuary

As Israel stood on the cusp of entering the Promised Land, Moses conveyed God's command regarding their future worship: they were to bring all their burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, and freewill offerings to a single designated place. This ensured unity in worship and celebrated God's blessings, emphasizing that their joy in the land would be tied to His presence at a central sanctuary.

But you shall seek the place which the LORD your God chooses from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling place, and there you shall come. There you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes… And there you shall eat before the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice in all your undertakings…
— Deuteronomy 12:5-7
Timeline Box: This command was given by Moses to the Israelites in the plains of Moab, just before they entered Canaan, approximately 1405 BC.

God's Enduring Presence Amidst Life's Journey

This Tishrei 23 reminds us of the profound continuity of God's divine presence and the unwavering call to worship, even as life's seasons change. The Mosaic Era command for central worship foreshadows the longing for God's dwelling, a desire beautifully fulfilled in Solomon's Temple dedication, where Israel rejoiced in God's tangible goodness. Yet, even as Israel dispersed from that celebratory feast, God's call to faithfulness remained.

In the New Testament, we see Paul, a faithful servant, standing resolute amidst false accusations. Though facing persecution, the Lord’s presence sustains him, just as God promised to be with His people in every generation. These accounts reveal God's eternal plan for His people to worship Him—whether in joyful celebration at a dedicated temple or steadfast endurance in the face of adversity. Ultimately, both the Temple and Paul's mission point to Jesus Christ, the true dwelling place of God among men and the ultimate sacrifice, who enables us to truly "rejoice in all our undertakings" through His Spirit. God’s greatness is revealed in His steadfast love, His provision for worship, and His empowering presence that guides His children through every phase of their journey.
