Returning Exiles Gather Materials For Temple Reconstruction

After the decree of Cyrus allowed the Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem, a profound sense of purpose filled the community as they prepared to rebuild the House of God. Having already established the altar and resumed regular sacrifices in the seventh month, the leaders diligently began the practical steps of temple construction. They allocated funds to skilled masons and carpenters, and made arrangements to import essential cedar logs from Lebanon, leveraging the maritime routes through Sidon and Tyre to bring the timber to the port of Joppa, fulfilling the grant received from King Cyrus.

They also gave money to the masons and to the carpenters, and food, drink, and oil to the Sidonians and to the Tyrians, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the Sea at Joppa, according to the grant they had from Cyrus king of Persia.

Timeline Box: The Jewish exiles arrived in Jerusalem in the seventh month (Tishri) of the first year of their return (Ezra 3:1). After re-establishing the altar and sacrifices, they proceeded to make arrangements for the temple's reconstruction. This process of gathering funds, hiring workers, and procuring materials from Lebanon (Ezra 3:7) would have taken place in the months following Tishri, before the foundation was laid in the second month (Iyar) of the second year (Ezra 3:8). Thus, 15 Cheshvan (the eighth month of the sacred calendar) aligns well with this initial phase of preparation and resource allocation.
