Prophecy Declares Judgment Against Jeroboam's House

Following King Solomon's death and the division of the kingdom, Jeroboam, the first king of Israel, established golden calves in Bethel and Dan, instituting a new religious calendar with a counterfeit feast in the eighth month. His apostasy quickly drew God's judgment. When Jeroboam's son, Abijah, fell ill, the king sent his wife to inquire of the prophet Ahijah, who, though blind, was given a divine message. Ahijah delivered a stark prophecy, declaring that because Jeroboam had done more evil than all who came before him, God would utterly cut off his house and bring disaster upon his lineage.

Go, tell Jeroboam, β€˜Thus says the LORD God of Israel, β€œBecause I exalted you from among the people and made you leader over My people Israel... but you have acted more wickedly than all who were before you... behold, I am bringing disaster upon the house of Jeroboam...”
β€” 1 Kings 14:7-10a LSB
Timeline Box: This prophecy of judgment against King Jeroboam's house occurred in the early years of the Divided Kingdom, following his establishment of a counterfeit feast in the eighth month (Cheshvan) and other idolatrous practices. While the exact day is not specified, it falls within the period of his reign and God's swift response to his apostasy, aligning with the season of Cheshvan, the 8th month of the biblical sacred calendar (second month of the civil year).
