The Silent Wednesday: Judas Bargains With The Enemy

Today has been a day of uncharacteristic silence from the Master. While Jerusalem hums with the frantic energy of Passover preparation, Jesus has largely remained in Bethany. It is a day of rest for the body, but a day of intense plotting for His enemies.

In a dark corner of the city, Judas Iscariot has met secretly with the chief priests to discuss the betrayal of the Master. Motivated by greed, he has agreed to hand Jesus over in the absence of the crowd for the price of thirty pieces of silver—the value of a common slave. The trap is now officially set.

"Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, 'What are you willing to give me to deliver Him to you?' And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him."
— Matthew 26:14-15 (LSB)
Timeline Box: Traditional Passion Week chronologies identify Wednesday as a day of rest for Jesus and the finalization of the betrayal plot by Judas.

Hezekiah's Priests Finish Cleansing The Temple

Just in time for the Passover, the priests under King Hezekiah have completed the purification of the entire Temple complex. The physical cleansing is done, and the spiritual restoration of Judah is in full swing. The King is preparing to invite even the remnant of the Northern Kingdom to come and celebrate.

"...Then they consecrated the house of Yahweh in eight days, and finished on the sixteenth day of the first month."
— 2 Chronicles 29:17 (LSB)
Timeline Box: The temple cleansing wrapped up just after the mid-point of Nisan.

The First Passover In Egypt

Tonight, the blood of the lamb has been painted on the doorposts of the Israelite homes in Goshen. The Angel of Death has passed through the land of Egypt, striking down the firstborn but "passing over" the houses covered by the blood. The centuries of slavery are ending tonight.

"For Yahweh will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, Yahweh will pass over the door..."
— Exodus 12:23 (LSB)
Timeline Box: The original Passover occurred on the evening of the 14th/15th of Nisan.

Editorial: The Hidden Choice

Today is about what happens in the shadows. Judas chooses thirty pieces of silver; the Israelites choose to paint blood on their doorposts. Our lives are defined by these hidden choices.

Are we resting in Bethany with the Master, or are we making dark bargains with the world? The Passover in Egypt required an active choice of faith to apply the blood. As we approach the climax of Holy Week, we must examine our loyalties. The blood of the Lamb is the only thing that causes judgment to pass over us.
