The Joy Of The Open Scriptures

In His appearances to the disciples, Jesus is performing a crucial miracle that requires no physical healing: He is opening their minds to understand the Scriptures. For three years, they had read the Law and the Prophets through the lens of political liberation. Now, the Master is painstakingly walking them through the scrolls, showing how the Christ had to suffer and rise again.

This intellectual and spiritual awakening is transforming the disciples from fearful fishermen into bold theologians. The events of the Passion Week are no longer seen as a tragic accident, but as the precise fulfillment of a divine script written centuries before. The Word of God is burning within their hearts.

"Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, 'Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day...'"
— Luke 24:45-46 (LSB)

The Philistines Return The Ark

Plagued by tumors and the destruction of their idol Dagon, the desperate Philistine lords have placed the Ark of the Covenant on a new cart drawn by two milk cows. Miraculously, without a driver, the cows headed straight up the road to the Israelite territory of Beth-shemesh, lowing as they went. The people of Israel are rejoicing at the return of the glory.

"And the cows took the straight way in the direction of Beth-shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right or to the left."
— 1 Samuel 6:12 (LSB)

Ehud Assassinates The Moabite King

Israel has been delivered! The left-handed judge Ehud secured a private audience with Eglon, the oppressive king of Moab. Drawing a concealed, double-edged sword, Ehud assassinated the king in his cool roof chamber and escaped into the hill country of Ephraim. He is currently blowing the trumpet to rally the Israelite forces for a decisive strike.

"And Ehud reached out with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly."
— Judges 3:21 (LSB)
Timeline Box: Ehud's daring assassination initiated an eighty-year period of peace for the nation.

Editorial: The Divine Blueprint

For centuries, the Israelites possessed the Scriptures, but they did not fully understand the divine blueprint. It required the resurrected Christ to open their minds to see that the suffering Servant and the conquering King were the same person.

Just as God directed the driverless cart to bring the Ark back to Beth-shemesh, God directed the events of history to bring the Messiah to the cross and out of the tomb. When we face confusing seasons, we must ask the Lord to open our minds to His Word, trusting that He is writing a story of redemption far greater than our own understanding.
