The Great Commission On The Mountain

In a monumental gathering, the eleven disciples have proceeded to a specific mountain in Galilee which Jesus had designated. Upon seeing the resurrected Christ, they bowed down in worship, though Matthew notes that some were still doubtful. It is here that Jesus delivered the mandate that will define the Church for millennia.

Declaring that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him, He commanded them to go and make disciples of all the nations. They are to baptize in the name of the Trinity and teach obedience to all His commands. He anchored this massive, global task with a simple, enduring promise: "I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit..."

Samson Strikes Down A Thousand Men

Bound with two new ropes by his own countrymen, Samson was handed over to the Philistines at Lehi. But the Spirit of Yahweh came upon him mightily, snapping the ropes like flax. Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he struck down a thousand Philistine soldiers, securing a massive, single-handed victory for Israel.

"Then he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, so he reached out and took it and struck down 1,000 men with it."
— Judges 15:15

The Cloud Directs The Camp

As the first month draws to a close, the nation of Israel has learned a new way of living in the wilderness. They are moving entirely according to the visual presence of Yahweh. Whenever the cloud lifts from over the tent, the sons of Israel set out; and wherever the cloud settles down, there they camp. They are learning absolute dependence on divine guidance.

"At the command of Yahweh the sons of Israel would set out, and at the command of Yahweh they would camp; as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped."
— Numbers 9:18
Timeline Box: The mechanism for wilderness travel was established following the erection of the Tabernacle in Nisan.

Editorial: Empowered For The Mission

When God issues a massive command, He always provides the presence and power to accomplish it. Samson was able to defeat an army with a jawbone because the Spirit came upon him. The Israelites survived the wilderness because the cloud of God directed their every step.

When Jesus commanded a ragtag group of Galilean fishermen to conquer the entire globe with the Gospel, it sounded impossible. But He prefaced it with His authority, and He concluded it with His presence. The Great Commission is not about our strategy or our strength; it is about moving when the "cloud" moves and trusting that the Lord is with us to the end of the age.
